At South Park Senior Citizens, honoring the diverse backgrounds of our community is a cherished tradition. This year, we proudly celebrated both Black History Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month with food, culture, and educational presentations that brought our seniors together in reflection and appreciation.
For Black History Month, seniors gathered to enjoy a Soul Food dinner, featuring smothered chicken and dirty rice, honoring African American culinary traditions. In addition to the delicious meal, we hosted a presentation on the history of gospel music, exploring its deep roots in African American culture, and also enjoyed a field trip to the Northwest African American Museum.
In May, for AAPI Heritage Month, we turned our spotlight to the Philippines. A cultural presentation introduced the country’s rich history, diverse languages, and vibrant traditions. Guests were treated to Pork Adobo, a beloved Filipino dish, and one of our Filipino seniors generously shared a traditional dessert, adding a warm and personal touch to the celebration.
