DESCRIPTION:The Day of the Dead (Spanish: el Día de Muertos or el Día de los Muertos) is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2\, though other days\, such as October 31 or November 6\, may be included depending on the locality. It is widely observed in Mexico\, where it largely developed\, and is also observed in other places\, especially by people of Mexican heritage. Although related to the simultaneous Christian remembrances for Hallowtide\, it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning. Some argue that there are Indigenous Mexican or ancient Aztec influences that account for the custom\, and it has become a way to remember those forebearers of Mexican culture. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone\, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed. \nTraditions connected with the holiday include honoring the deceased using calaveras and marigold flowers known as cempazúchitl\, building home altars called ofrendas with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed\, and visiting graves with these items as gifts for the deceased. The celebration is not solely focused on the dead\, as it is also common to give gifts to friends such as candy sugar skulls\, to share traditional pan de muerto with family and friends\, and to write light-hearted and often irreverent verses in the form of mock epitaphs dedicated to living friends and acquaintances\, a literary form known as calaveras literarias. \nfrom Wikipedia: Day of the Dead

DESCRIPTION:Pchum Ben is a Cambodian 15-day religious festival\, culminating in celebrations on the 15th day of the tenth month in the Khmer calendar\, at the end of the Buddhist Lent\, Vassa. \nThe day is a time when many Cambodians pay their respects to deceased relatives of up to seven generations. Buddhist monks chant the suttas in Pali language overnight (continuously\, without sleeping) in prelude to the gates of hell opening\, an event that is presumed to occur once a year\, and is linked to the cosmology of King Yama. During this period\, the gates of hell are opened and spirits of the ancestors are presumed to be especially active. In order to liberate them\, food-offerings are made to benefit them\, some of them having the opportunity to end their period of purgation\, whereas others are imagined to leave hell temporarily\, to then return to endure more suffering; without much explanation\, relatives who are not in hell (who are in heaven or other realms of existence) are also generally expected to benefit from the ceremonies.

DESCRIPTION:Hispanic Heritage Month initially began as a weeklong celebration in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson who\, at the time said\, “The people of Hispanic descent are the heirs of missionaries\, captains\, soldiers\, and farmers who were motivated by a young spirit of adventure\, and a desire to settle freely in a free land.” \nIt wasn’t until 1988 that President Ronald Reagan extended the week to a full 31 days — through Oct. 15 — keeping the Sept. 15 start date because it coincides with national independence day of Guatemala\, Honduras\, El Salvador\, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Similarly\, Mexico celebrates on the 16th\, Chile on the 18th and Belize on the 21st.

DESCRIPTION:Excerpt from the Declaration of Independence\, July 4\, 1776: \nThe history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations\, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.
