DESCRIPTION:Buy Nothing Day is a day of protest against consumerism. In North America\, the United Kingdom\, Finland and Sweden\, Buy Nothing Day is held the day after U.S. Thanksgiving\, concurrent with Black Friday; elsewhere\, it is held the following day\, which is the last Saturday in November. \nCreated by artist Ted Dave and promoted by magazine and nonprofit Adbusters\, Buy Nothing Day encourages people not to shop for one day. Participants may participate in a variety of anti-consumerist and philanthropic activities\, such as donating winter coats or marching through stores. Some activists have also extended Buy Nothing Day to cover the entire Christmas shopping season. As of 2001\, Buy Nothing Day was observed in over 35 countries. In the late 1990s\, Adbusters created a TV commercial to promote Buy Nothing Day in the US\, but most television stations refused to air it. DESCRIPTION:Disco is a genre of dance music and a subculture that emerged in the 1970s from the United States’ urban nightlife scene. Its sound is typified by four-on-the-floor beats\, syncopated basslines\, string sections\, brass and horns\, electric piano\, synthesizers\, and electric rhythm guitars. \nDisco started as a mixture of music from venues popular among African-Americans\, Hispanic/Latino Americans\, gay Americans and Italian Americans in Philadelphia and New York City during the late 1960s to early 1970s. Disco can be seen as a reaction by the 1960s counterculture to both the dominance of rock music and the stigmatization of dance music at the time. Several dance styles were developed during the period of disco’s popularity in the United States\, including “the Bump” and “the Hustle”.

DESCRIPTION:Pchum Bun is a Cambodian 15-day religious festival\, culminating in celebrations on the 15th day of the tenth month in the Khmer calendar\, at the end of the Buddhist Lent\, Vassa. In 2023\, Pchum Bun will begin on October 13 and end on October 16. \nThe day is a time when many Cambodians pay their respects to deceased relatives of up to seven generations. Buddhist monks chant the suttas in Pali language overnight (continuously\, without sleeping) in prelude to the gates of hell opening\, an event that is presumed to occur once a year\, and is linked to the cosmology of King Yama. During this period\, the gates of hell are opened and spirits of the ancestors are presumed to be especially active. In order to liberate them\, food-offerings are made to benefit them\, some of them having the opportunity to end their period of purgation\, whereas others are imagined to leave hell temporarily\, to then return to endure more suffering; without much explanation\, relatives who are not in hell (who are in heaven or other realms of existence) are also generally expected to benefit from the ceremonies.

SUMMARY:Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival
DESCRIPTION:While the Mid-autumn Festival originated in China and is celebrated in many Asian countries\, the Vietnamese version has its own traditions and legends. Our best-known tale is about a man named Cuội who hung on to a magical banyan tree as it floated up to the moon. We say that if you look closely at the full moon\, you can see the shadow of a man sitting under a tree. Children parade lanterns in the streets the night of Mid-autumn Festival to help light the way to earth for Cuội from the moon. \nThe celebration of the harvest is an important part of Tết Trung Thu\, as many Vietnamese live in rural areas and work as farmers. Tết Trung Thu marks a joyous occasion when the work is finished and there’s time to spend with loved ones.

SUMMARY:Hispanic Independence Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Hispanic Heritage Month initially began as a weeklong celebration in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson who\, at the time said\, “The people of Hispanic descent are the heirs of missionaries\, captains\, soldiers\, and farmers who were motivated by a young spirit of adventure\, and a desire to settle freely in a free land.” \nIt wasn’t until 1988 that President Ronald Reagan extended the week to a full 31 days — through Oct. 15 — keeping the Sept. 15 start date because it coincides with national independence day of Guatemala\, Honduras\, El Salvador\, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Similarly\, Mexico celebrates on the 16th\, Chile on the 18th and Belize on the 21st.
